This is my first carving. My girlfriend once asked me how I got into carving. I told her it started when I was about 12 years old. My dad had taken the family to a steam engine show and they had a dozen or so craft booths littering the venue. We came up to a woman's booth and I saw this brightly colored coral snake weaving through the holes of a piece of driftwood. I was in complete awe. I'm generally a shy person and don't talk to people I don't know, but I remember asking the woman quite a few question about how she made that snake. It's kind of hard to explain the feeling and emotions that the carving brought out in me. I just remember saying to myself "I can do that. I have to try and do that." When we got back home that afternoon, i got out my pocket knife and went searching for a piece of wood. This is what I came up with. This is a solid piece of wood measuring 7" from the base. I just carved along its natural shape and tried to separate the dark tone from lighter one just to give it something extra. It amazes me to this day that seeing that one carving at a steam engine show helped shape into the type of artist I have become today.
